Day 3 (from Busan to Gyeongju)
It was kinda like a runaway trip to Gyeongju. My original plan was to stay in Busan for 3-4 days, spending my 3rd day in the Northern area such as Geumjeongsanseong Fortress and Beomeosa Temple and shopping at Pusan National University Shopping Street followed by a Night View Tour with Busan City Tour Bus (citytourbusan.com) and then leaving early for Gyeongju on my 4th day.
But i decided to get out of Busan, because i was afraid of being found. I woke up, packed my stuff and when i was about to leave my room with my backpack, my phone rang. He had figured out how to call international number. I told him that i am leaving Busan for Gyeongju and he said to meet me for lunch. Why not! Sigh.. Why not?
In 30mins time, he arrived at my lobby, carried my backpack, put into his car boot and drove to Nampo Dong after i said i want to eat cold noodles. All along i have been eating instant Cold noodles which i bought from supermarket and it was the first time i am eating cold noodles in a Korean restaurant and its mastita!!! The accompanying hot drink which taste like some non oily stock is ultra tasty as well. The restaurant is located on the left at the end of Gwangbok-ro Shopping Street. It is suppose to be very famous but with autumn and before lunch hour, we were one of the few customers in the store.
After which he drove me to the interstate bus terminal which was not at where i thought it will be. I thought it will be at Busan Station which is a couple of stops from Nampo Dong but in the end it was actually about 30-45mins drive away. All the way North, after Beomeosa Temple, at Busan Central Bus Terminal. All thanks to him i did not take the wrong route and thanks to him i get to eat the delicious cold noodles.
I bought my bus ticket to Gyeongju at krw4500. Since there was another 45mins before my bus depart, i treat him to a coffee at Paris Baguette to thank him for driving me around and for paying for all my meals. What i paid for is so little as compared to what he has treated me, but something better than nothing i guess.
We chat for a while more and then it was time to board the bus at platform 6. The bus was not even half filled and the journey was the shortest intercity ride i have ever taken. When i was about to make myself very comfortable, i realised we are entering into the city of Gyeongju. All in about 1.5hrs time. Perhaps it was the scenery of golden fields and blue skies that made the journey seems so short.
I went to the nearest information center i can see and ask them to help me book an accommodation after giving my budget (krw 30,000). They manage to find one at krw40,000 which i agreed to take on. The helpful ladies at i wrote down the address of the accommodation for me and ask me to take a cab. 'Its very near' they said. Indeed it was, less than krw4000 later and i was there. My accommodation is 3mins walk from the Daereungwon Royal Tombs and walkable to the other attractions in the area. I managed to get 2 nights stay at krw 70,000. Own room, own toilet. Yup, happy.
I left my baggage in the room, slide the wooden doors and lock the outer door with a metal spoon. Yes. A metal spoon. It is all about trust. Hahaha.... I walked out looking for food and all i want was rice. It was around 4pm and i was starving. I walked along the main road and all i see are cafes and finally a restaurant selling some traditional rice set which requires 2 to eat. I went into a few and they rejected me. I was starving!!!! I walked on, thinking i will have to settled for bread or cakes until i saw this guy cleaning his bike outside a cafe. I asked him where can i go for bap (rice) and he point infront. I asked him to write down the shop name for me and he did. Once again, i see light! I thanked him and float off to the restaurant just after the junction. It is a traditional sit on the wooden floor restaurant. I took on my shoes, smile alot and looked tired and went to a table. The lady boss asked me what i want and i point to the table beside me. She said 'Gyeongju Bimbibap?' and i said 'YES'. She said 'Hanna?(one)' and i look up at her like the way puss in boots did and nodded my head. She hesitated for a while and said 'okok' and went into the kitchen. I almost burst into tears. SHe came back 10mins later and brought with her a tray of delicious looking food. She helped me put the rice into the main bowl, add the chili paste, stirred and gestured for me to tuck in. It was one of the best meal ever. A meal that makes me go all warm inside. And it was super ultra delicious. All this for just SGD$9. And there was a bowl of hot spicy tofu soup to go along. I call this restaurant My Heaven.
Satisfied, i asked for directions for Anapji Ponds, they point to across the road and i saw the roadsigns pointing there as well. I cross the road and first thought was 'No admission fees?' second was ' This is Anapji Ponds? The one everyone commended as a must go?' I walked on a unpaved path , beside me are wilted lotus flowers. I guess i have come at the wrong season. I am sure it will be very beautiful if the lotus flowers are all in full bloom. I walked to the Pavilion in the middle of the pond, sat there looking at the clouds, still not able to believe that this is Anapji Ponds. Walked around some more, trying to find reasons why they say this is one of the best sight in Gyeongju. Finally decided to give out and walk out.
I see ppl riding bikes, looking like tourist, zooming past me, past Anapji Ponds and i decided to go in that direction.
I.FINALLY.REACH.ANAPJI.PONDS. It is a 5mins walk up from the Lotus Flower Complex. Faintz. I paid krw 1,000 for admission, walked in and understood why they say this is a must go. This place is IPUDA! Not flowers blooming everywhere kinda pretty but simple, ancient kinda pretty. I walked around the pond 3 times, tried to capture the place during sunset. I wanted to stay there longer as reviews state that the best time for photos is when the lights are switched on after sunset but sadly, my dslr died on me and it was getting too cold for my thin thin cardigan. I finally left at 7pm.
I cross the road, walked up a little slope and followed the little walking path to Seokbingko Ice storehouse which is a rather big underground 'warehouse' to store Ice built many many many many years ago. Then i passed by Wolseong Fortress which is suppose to be real pretty with cherry blossoms and rape flowers field but again, i was there at the wrong season. It was getting darker and there are no street lamps and not much ppl along the path and i was starting to panic as i have no idea how long more i need to walk to get out of here and reach the main road. I started walking faster and faster and finally saw the turnoff to Cheomseongdae Observatory. Phew.
i walked back out to the main street and walked back to my accommodation and i realised that i am hungry again. I saw this big restaurant and ordered a tofu soup. I realised that this restaurant is so big because it needs to cater to the busloads of tourists who will be visiting the nearby attractions during the day. It feels like a canteen. Needless to say, the food was not that impressive and i felt that it was loaded with MSG. Just a personal opinion.
I walked back to my accommodation after the meal as it was getting too cold and too dark for me. It was only 8+pm. The owner of the accommodation was standing by the door doing some warm up exercise as i was walking in and i gestured cold by hugging myself, tightly. He asked me to go into my room. It was heated!! The floor is warm and comfortable that i just lie down and soak in the warmth. There is a TV in the room but no Wifi so, it was a early night for me.
